Serial Digital Interface, also known as SDI to the AV world is a digital interface. The SDI standard allows transmission of uncompressed and unencrypted digital video signals in broadcast-grade video, studio, live staging and post production environments. SDI uses coaxial cables with BNC connectors and is produced in a few different standards including SD-SDI, ED-SDI, HD-SDI, Dual Link HD-SDI and 3G-SDI.
The purpose of SDI extenders is for the extension of SDI signals whether it is HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, SD-SDI or there SDI standards. Not all SDI extenders accommodate the various SDI standards so be sure to do your research before making a purchase. The easiest and most convenient route when extending an SDI signal is using a cable equalizer. Typically, SDI cable equalizer can transmit an HD-SDI signal up to 400 feet and SDI up to 500 feet using a coaxial cable. If your application requires a much longer extension, the only way to go is fiber optic. Fiber optic extenders can extend 3G-SDI, HD-SDI and SDI signals very long distances up to 30 km or 18.75 miles. These extenders are best suited for environments including airports, stadiums, building to building, large facilities, university campuses.
