The purpose of a DVI extender is to extend either a single link or dual link DVI signal a long distances. A typical DVI cable can run 50 feet before experiencing degradation. DVI extenders are usually used for applications such as restaurants, schools, stadiums, live events and many more where a cable run of more than 50 feet is necessary. DVI extension is achieved in several ways including signal regenerators, cable equalizers, uncompressed twisted pair also known as category cables (HDBaseT Technology), coaxial cables and fiber cables or wirelessly. Cable equalizers and signal regenerators are convenient for residential applications that require less than 200 feet of signal extension. If your application needs more distance then a shielded category cable or UTP (unshielded twisted pair) will allow a DVI extension of up to 330 feet. The next level for extending a DVI signal extremely long distances would be to use a fiber optic extender. Fiber optic extenders will allow you to transmit a DVI signal around the realm of 18 miles. If your application consists of stadiums, airports or any large facility a fiber optic extender is the way to go. Last, but not least is wireless extension which relieves the user from cables while allowing and DVI signal to travel 40 to 80 feet with great quality. DVI extenders are typical transmitters and receivers that are usually sold as a set, but not limited to being sold separately. They are normally small box units; however manufacturers have been developing wall plate versions to accommodate boardroom and classroom applications. Some DVI extenders have additional features including transmitters with multiple outputs for amplifying and splitting a signal. On the other hand receivers may also include loops outs to assist with daisy chaining a signal.
