The CS1708A is an 8-port PS/2-USB VGA KVM switcher designed to provide single-console control of multiple computers. It enables keyboard, video and mouse (KVM) access from one PS/2 or USB console and supports daisy-chaining to scale control up to 256 computers. The unit is rack-mountable in 1U and built for server room and control-room environments.
Key features include dual PS/2 and USB console interfaces, a front-accessible USB Type-A port for connecting peripherals on a per-computer basis, and daisy-chain support for up to 31 additional units. The switcher supports auto PS/2 and USB interface detection and USB/PS2 keyboard and mouse emulation so systems boot even when focus is elsewhere. Video DynaSync stores the console monitor EDID to optimize display resolution and reduce display reconfiguration time.
On the performance side, the CS1708A supports video resolutions up to 2048 x 1536 with DDC2B compliance. The unit provides multi-platform support including Windows, Linux, Mac and Sun, and supports USB keyboards for PC, Mac and Sun systems. Other operational controls include OSD, hotkey and front-panel pushbutton port selection, an auto-scan feature and broadcast mode for simultaneous commands to multiple ports.
Connectivity options include one SPHD-18 console connector, eight SPHD-15/17 KVM ports, DB-25 daisy-chain connectors, an RJ-11 firmware upgrade port and a front USB Type-A port. Power is supplied via a DC jack and the switch consumes DC 5.3 V at 5 W. LEDs indicate online status, selected ports, station ID and power state to simplify monitoring in chained installations.
Common applications include server room consolidation, multi-machine testing benches and AV control stations where a single console must access many systems. The daisy-chain capability and station auto-sense reduce setup complexity when expanding to larger deployments. Two-level password security supports up to four users plus an administrator for controlled access in multi-operator environments.
The CS1708A is designed for straightforward installation and operation – hot-pluggable ports allow adding or removing computers without powering down the switch. Firmware upgrades can be propagated across chained units via the daisy-chain cable, and the metal housing provides rack-ready durability. Overall the unit delivers broad compatibility and scaling options for managing large multi-computer setups from a single console.
