Converters and Scalers

The AV world and electronics in general compromise of many different signals. HDMI, DVI, SDI, VGA, analog, component, composite, S-video, audio and digital are a few signals we come across. In the AV industry, the ability to tie these signals together come in a form of a converter with a scaler that allows compatibility between devices.

A converter has the ability to adjust an input signal to work with an output signal that is different. For example, your grandparents would like to show their wedding video on your newly high resolution LCD panel with an HDMI input only, but the video was recorded using VHS type and their brought an old VHS player, which you need to connect to your TV. In this scenario, you would need a device that will convert an analog signal (old VHS tape) to digital (your new TV with an HDMI input). Basically, you would connect the VCR via composite cable to a converter and upscale the output to a digital HDMI signal to your LCD screen.

Let us reverse the scenario. A grandson would like to connect his new laptop with a HDMI input to an old projector with VGA to show his family the photos he took from his vacation. When working with a source that has a high resolution with a lower resolutions device, a user will need a converter with a downscale feature. In many cases, the converter has a built in scaler which will automatically select the correct resolution adjustment that is needed.

As mentioned, many converters have a built in scaler. The objective of a scaler is to adjust video aspects including color, aspect ratio and audio. When working with multiple formats, a converter/scaler provides versatility in accepting a variety of formats from set-top boxes, Blu-Ray players, game consoles, and laptops to output a scaled picture to match resolution of your display. Present day converters with internal scalers enable up and down scaling to support compatibility between the source and the display.
